American Medical Association Says ‘No’ to Physician-Assisted Suicide

This summer, after 2 years of in-depth study by our Council on Ethical and Judicial Affairs (CEJA) and another year of formal debate, we at the AMA House of Delegates voted at the annual meeting by a 71% majority to reaffirm our opposition to physician assisted suicide, again noting that it is “fundamentally incompatible with the physician’s role as healer, would be difficult or impossible to control, and would pose serious societal risks.”  

We are the largest medical association in the country. With our recent vote reaffirming opposition we join the 2nd largest physician association, the American College of Physicians, which reaffirmed its opposition in 2017, as well as the World Medical Association, which reaffirmed its opposition in 2015.

I won’t intentionally help my patients to end their lives

The Australian Medical Association as well as most other international medical bodies do not support assisted dying laws. The American College of Physicians has this month published its position statement reaffirming its strong opposition to this practice on many levels. Even doctors who do support this are reluctant to provide scripts or perform euthanasia themselves.

These are the reasons why I – along with 100 other Victorian cancer specialists – have put my name to an appeal to Victorian MPs not to pass the legislation.

Regardless of any change in the law, I won’t intentionally help my patients to end their lives, nor do I personally know of any doctor who will. It is not the solution to the complex problems people face at the end of life, and it creates more problems and injustices than it solves.

American College of Physicians Opposes Assisted Suicide

The internist members of the ACP understand that assisted suicide is not beneficent. It is, rather — even though unintended — the abandonment of those among us experiencing their time of greatest need for unconditional inclusion, love, and truly compassionate care.
